An early step into abstraction, where colour, texture and two landscapes began to meet.
Blooming Between Water & Desert was my first exploration of abstract mixed media, created as I began moving away from representing a landscape literally and allowing colour, texture and instinct to lead the work.
The painting brings together influences from two landscapes that have shaped me — the warmth and earthiness of Jordan and the lush colour and water of Far North Queensland. Flowers emerge through layered marks, while turquoise, ochre, gold and earthy textures move more freely across the surface.
Rather than depicting either place directly, I allowed fragments of both to coexist within an imagined landscape. Looking back, the work became an early exploration of ideas that continue to appear in my practice: memory, place, belonging and the connection between different landscapes.
It was a beginning — learning to trust what could emerge without knowing exactly where the painting would lead.
