Meet Hala Kattab
I am a Cairns-based, self-taught mixed-media artist whose work explores resilience, memory, belonging and the relationship between people and place.
Drawing on landscapes, architecture, cultural memory and lived experience across Australia and Jordan, I create layered works that move between the personal and the universal. My paintings often incorporate acrylic and oil alongside collage, texture, calligraphy and found materials, allowing fragments of image, language and memory to emerge through the surface.
Resilience Through Art began as a personal healing practice and gradually evolved into a wider creative practice encompassing exhibitions, storytelling, community programs and shared creative experiences.
It builds on my earlier work through Resilient Communities, where I focused on strengthening community resilience and building the capability of organisations and practitioners to engage effectively with diverse communities and better understand the people they serve. That experience now also informs Calm Under Pressure, bringing together my background in capacity building with reflective and creative practice.
I am a recipient of the 2014 National Resilient Australia Award, recognising my work in community resilience.
Professional Development & Creative Practice
Where professional practice meets creative practice
Over time, the different strands of my work began to come together. Years of capacity building, community engagement, training and resilience work now inform a growing range of programs that combine professional learning with reflective and creative practice.
Some are designed for workplace teams and organisations; others create space for personal reflection and creative expression. What connects them is an emphasis on understanding ourselves and others, communicating with care, and creating space to pause, reflect and respond.

Creative reflection for workplace teams
Bringing together my background in capacity building, workplace learning and resilience with creative practice. Participants use a simple creative process to pause, observe, reflect and explore communication, decision-making and responses to workplace pressure. -
Professional development for organisations and communities
Drawing on my experience in cross-cultural communication and community engagement, these facilitated programs explore cultural understanding, inclusive communication, collaboration and constructive ways of working across difference. -
Creativity, reflection and personal expression
A gentle, beginner-friendly creative experience for people who want to reconnect with painting without pressure or comparison. The emphasis is on presence, exploration and finding a personal creative voice.
Between Jordan and Australia
I was born in Jordan, and my life has unfolded across different countries, cultures and communities before making Cairns, Australia, home.
Those places continue to live within my work. The stone and desert landscapes of Jordan, its ancient architecture and cultural memory sit alongside the tropical light, waterways and landscapes of Far North Queensland.
I don't experience these as separate worlds. Over time, they have become layers of the same story, shaping how I think about home, migration, memory and belonging.
I carry both places with me.
Jordan is held in memory, in stone, desert, architecture and family. Australia is the place where new roots have grown. My art has become a space where neither needs to replace the other.
A quiet exploration of resilience, where light emerges through stillness and transformation.
Through layered glazes and earth tones, my work explores stillness, passage, and a quiet dialogue between figure and landscape.

While waiting for my next flight to Jordan, I opened my sketchbook and experimented with water-soluble oil pastels for the first time. What emerged was not Petra itself, but a memory of Petra.
