An exploration of belonging, memory and the experience of becoming rooted in two homelands.
Ancient Jordanian archaeological forms, Roman columns and pathways emerge through layers of texture and memory, intertwined with an Australian gum tree whose branches and roots extend across the composition.
Fragments of Arabic calligraphy are woven into the work, including بين وطنين, “between two homelands”, connecting language, place and memory across the two landscapes.
Rooted Between Two Homelands is not simply about leaving one homeland and arriving in another. It reflects what happens after living long enough for both places to become part of you, putting down new roots without uprooting the old ones.
At its heart is a reflection on belonging: we can grow new roots while still carrying the land, memories and stories that first shaped us.
